AIDS, for instance, is a recent phenomenon, while malaria has plagued humans for millennia. Recently, scientists examining ticks fossilized in amber found they were infected with bacteria similar to those that cause Lyme disease, a spirochete bacteria named Borrelia burgdorferi.
