Galveston school district officials and athletic training staff follow an extensive protocol when it comes to students being let back on the field after a concussion. Galveston ISD partners with a UTMB physician who is on the sidelines of almost every game the district plays. If a student suffers a head injury during practice, the athlete is immediately taken into a quiet area and a SCAT 3 test is administered to determine whether they have a concussion, district spokeswoman Dyann Polzin said. If a concussion is identified, the athlete is immediately referred to a physician, and will go through what the district calls its “Return to Play” program, which involves rest and being brought back up to speed, she said.
