UTMB’s Dr. David Herndon answers questions about receiving the International Burn Foundation’s Tanner-Vandeput-Boswick Burn Prize. “Tremendous advances have been made in the last 40 years that I’ve been involved in burn care. There’s been a dramatic decrease in mortality. It used to be that a 50 percent burn killed half the people who received it. Now, someone with a 98 percent burn can live half the time — if it’s received and treated in Galveston — due to the advances that we’ve been able to contribute to in research, education, resuscitation and understanding how to support the energy needs in patients and, most importantly, being able to remove and replace the burned wound initially with skin from other people.” [Note: Link unavailable.]
