UTMB’s Perinatal Hospice and Palliative Care Program brings together different doctors, nurses and faculty members to provide a resource and guidance for families. “We take the ones that we know are going to have a bad trajectory,” said UTMB’s Dr. Cara Geary. “We get involved early and we prepare it to be the best possible story for the family.” Eva Blight, a nurse practitioner and the third co-director of the perinatal hospice, said she helps parents coordinate things so what the parents want and plan for is what happens. That can mean having extra time to listen to the baby’s heartbeat during a checkup, or more ultrasounds so that the parents, who may never see their baby alive out of the womb, can see him on the screen.
