Children with emotional or learning disabilities, or children enrolling in a new school, may find the transition from summer vacation days to a structured, unfamiliar school routine overwhelming or stressful. “If you have a child with some emotional or learning issues already, starting a new school year or going to a different school is going to be much more challenging,” says UTMB pediatrician Dr. William L. Mize, who specializes in child development and behavior disorders. “Healthy kids cope better with change week by week. But parents should ask themselves, how many different dimensions of change is the child coping with at once? If there are many stressors together, the effect is cumulative and a child will cope less well with the main thing in his life, which is school.” Mize’s clinic is located at the UTMB Pediatric Specialty Center at Bay Colony in League City. He performs comprehensive diagnostic interviews to determine the range of possible problems.
