Many in the health care industry are now taking steps to help reduce the number of dollars spent on unnecessary procedures. UTMB’s Dr. Howard Brody recently said that the Philadelphia-based American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation has done its own research to expose medical procedures that waste money, subject patients to risk or harm and don’t provide associated benefits. As employers struggle with escalating costs of health care coverage, Brody said it would benefit them to educate themselves and their workers about the potential overuse of tests, which are listed on a website set up by the Internal Medicine Foundation. In return, patients may see lower health care costs and experience better care outcomes, he said.
