After appearing on a nationally syndicated television show to talk about an innovative, but rarely performed treatment for prostate cancer, UTMB’s Dr. Eric Walser said he began receiving more calls from potential patients not just outside the Houston area, but from outside the country. “I got a lot from Canada, because they don’t offer a lot of choices up there,” he said. “A lot of wealthy people. They want to come because they’re looking for something they can’t get at home, and they’re willing to spend money to get it.” Walser isn’t alone in experiencing this phenomenon. In recent years, the number of people who travel long distances to receive care has grown, greatly expanding the industry known as medical tourism. [Note: Paid subscription required.]
