Once considered a threat to the elderly, strokes are increasingly affecting younger people. The trend locally of young adults suffering strokes is alarming, said UTMB’s Barbara M. Doucet. Since 2009, when the medical branch began offering a free post-stroke clinic, about 75 people have participated in the program. Of the participants, 27 percent are in the 41 to 50 age group, and 33 percent are in the 51 to 60 age group. “Together, that accounts for 60 percent of all strokes seen here at our clinic,” Doucet said.
