It only makes sense to invest in efforts to stop Ebola at its source, in the impoverished African nations where it continues to spread. But, we also need to be investing in efforts to develop drugs and vaccines to combat tropical diseases that don't get the attention Ebola commands. Dr. Peter Melby, director of the Center for Tropical Diseases at UTMB, told the Chronicle that these neglected tropical diseases don't make money for pharmaceutical companies, which means there's little incentive for industry to get involved. "So it's left to academia to fill that gap," he said, "and we're limited by a lack of funding."
