Policy Lunch
“How Philanthropy Can Improve Community Health” will be the topic of the next Healthy Health Policy Lunch and Learn Lecture. Elena M. Marks, president and chief executive officer for the Episcopal Health Foundation, will present at noon Wednesday in the Ashbel Smith Building Amphitheater (Old Red) on the UTMB Galveston campus. The series is sponsored by the Offices of the President and Health Policy and Legislative Affairs, and co-sponsored by the Center to Eliminate Health Disparities and the UTMB student chapters of the American Medical Association and the Texas Medical Association. SCI Café: Growing a Human Lung
The Sealy Center for Environmental Health and Medicine, Institute for Translational Sciences and the Mod Coffeehouse in downtown Galveston present the latest discussion of SCI Café (Where Science and Communities Interact). Joan E. Nichols, associate director of the Galveston National Laboratory and professor of internal medicine and infectious diseases, and Dr. Joaquin Cortiella, director of the Lab of Tissue Engineering and Organ Regeneration and professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, will discuss “Growing a Human Lung: A Translational Science Journey” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mod Coffeehouse, 2126 Postoffice St. in Galveston. Masking
for Unvaccinated Workers
Influenza and RSV seasons have begun and masking requirements for UTMB health care workers who have not been vaccinated for influenza will begin Nov. 17. These individuals must wear a surgical mask while in a patient care area, including inpatient rooms, exam rooms, nurses’ stations and corridors in patient care areas.

America Recycles Day
Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. UTMB is partnering with the city of Galveston and Shred Pro from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Galveston ECO Center, 702 61st St. The event is free and open to all Galveston Island residents. Professionals will offer on-site shredding of confidential paper files, recycling of old electronics, ferrous and nonferrous metals, plastics 1-7 including Styrofoam, cardboard and glass (no trash). There will also be free mulch for those who bring their own buckets or bags.

Veterans Day
UTMB will salute the service and sacrifice of our nation’s enlisted and former servicemen and women. All UTMB clinics will be open and seeing patients. John Sealy Hospital and the Trauma Center are always open.
